The nc (or netcat) utility is used for just about anything under the sun involving TCP or UDP. Before I jump into Netcat, I just wanted to show the manual page description for the netcat command for a more accurate, technical description… Netcat - The Swiss Army Knife of Networking Firewalls on either machine make it a little more tricky and require a few more steps. Without firewalls this process is fairly straightforward and allows for a simple connection between the two machines. One machine listens for a connection which essentially opens a specific port whilst the other attempts to connect to this open port. I decided that I wanted to set up my own network of two virtual machines, one with the Kali Linux OS and one Windows OS so I could really understand the theory behind Netcat.įrom my basic understanding Netcat is a utility that can be used to create connections between two (or more) machines using specified ports. This meant that I wasn’t quite understanding the theory behind some of the tasks and sometimes luckily stumbling across the flag and then moving on to the next question. Going through the OSCP course, the main goal is to find the flag, however I found myself, at times, just stabbing in the dark and trying different techniques learnt in the module in the attempt to find the flag (that is the general goal I guess). I just wanted to share my method to practice using Netcat with two virtual machines on my own network.
